Permitted Paid Engagement Overview
The Permitted Paid Engagement (PPE) visa allows certain individuals to come to the UK for up to one month to undertake a specific paid engagement. Unlike the Standard Visitor route, which does not generally permit paid work in the UK, the PPE route recognises that some categories of professional engagement necessarily involve remuneration from a UK source.
The PPE route is a specialist route and is only available to individuals in specific categories. It is not a general work route, and applicants must be able to demonstrate that their engagement falls within the permitted categories.
Who Can Use the Permitted Paid Engagement Route?
The PPE route is available to the following categories of individuals:
- Academics: Professors and researchers who are employed abroad and are invited by a UK Higher Education Institution or Research Institution to examine students or take part in or chair a selection panel, give lectures (not forming part of an ongoing series), carry out research, or participate in a conference
- Examiners and assessors: Individuals invited to assess or examine students at UK institutions
- Expert witnesses: Those giving evidence in UK legal proceedings as an expert witness
- Arts and entertainment: Artists, entertainers, and musicians invited to take part in cultural events or festivals
- Fashion models: Those invited to model for a fashion designer
Key Requirements
To qualify for a Permitted Paid Engagement visa, applicants must:
- Fall within one of the permitted categories above
- Have been issued with a formal written invitation from a UK individual or organisation
- Intend to stay in the UK for no more than one month
- Be employed or self-employed outside the UK in their relevant profession
- Intend to leave the UK at the end of the engagement
- Have sufficient funds to maintain themselves without recourse to public funds
Difference from the Standard Visitor Route
Standard Visitors may attend meetings, conferences, and events in a business capacity, but may not receive payment from a UK source for their activities. The PPE route allows specific categories of professionals to receive remuneration from UK sources for their visit, within the narrow categories set out in the Immigration Rules.
