UK Fiancé Visa Overview
The Fiancé Visa — formally known as the Proposed Civil Partner or Fiancé Visa — is designed for individuals who wish to travel to the UK to marry their British citizen or settled partner. Once in the UK and married, the holder can apply to switch to a Spouse Visa and remain in the UK.
Key Requirements
- You must be aged 18 or over at the time of application
- Your sponsor must be a British citizen or person with indefinite leave to remain
- Both parties must be free to marry (not already married to each other or anyone else)
- The sponsor must meet the financial requirement (currently £29,000 per annum)
- You must intend to marry within 6 months of arriving in the UK
- There must be adequate accommodation available
- English language requirement must be met (A1 level or exemption applies)
After You Arrive in the UK
A Fiancé Visa is granted for 6 months and does not permit you to work. Once you have married in the UK, you must apply to switch to a Spouse Visa before your Fiancé Visa expires.
